Leadlight
jewellery boxes and containers have become a collectable art
form, and are often commissioned as a special occasion gift
or memorial. Each piece is unique, conventional or abstract,
designed to suit the personality of the recipient. Many of
these jewellery boxes use for the handle, a scrap of ocean
polished glass or china. This is collected from two sites
close to Hobart. One is a beach near the spot where a 19th
century ship went down with a cargo of china. The other is
the site of an old bottle dump on the eastern shore at Bellerive
that has been transformed over time into a tiny, tranquil
cove filled with clattering shingle made up of almost as much
glass and china as rock.
