Douglas
Cartwright.
From an early working life that included a short-lived
apprenticeship as a chef, a term in the army as a radio
operator and working as a machine operator in the construction
industry, Douglas became an artist in 1991 when his
interest was kindled by the chance discovery of a cardboard
box full of oil paints on a demolition site where he
was working. He took evening classes in painting, then
went on to study painting and ceramics at the University
of Tasmania's Hunter Street Art School.
At
this time he learned the essentials of leadlighting
and working with glass at a weekend workshop run by
noted Tasmanian glass artist Christine Gulline. In 1994
Douglas came to Queensland in search of funding to continue
his university studies - and never made it back to Tasmania.
Settling
on the Gold Coast, he continued to paint, while the
small leadlight pieces he made as a hobby in his spare
moments gradually increased in importance until they
had developed into a full-blown occupation. In 2002
Douglas and his partner moved from the Gold Coast to
Logan, chiefly for its more central location. Around
this time his intermittent contact with the Annerley
Glassworx became more regular and he began working closely
with them on projects large and small.
Douglas continues to paint occasionally - between his
many other interests. His artistic practice is concerned
with coaxing beautiful formal designs from the utilitarian
tangle of power lines and street furniture that characterises
the urban environment. His style is best described as
rational hyper-realism, embodying clean lines, crisp
edges and planes of pure colour. A selection of his
paintings are on display at Pallaier Antiques, 770 Ipswich
Road Annerley. HIs work is represented in the Gold Coast
City collection, Bond University collection and numerous
private collections in Queensland.
